ACC CONTERN

JULY 1996: Bjarne Riis, former rider of the ACC Contern, wins the Tour de France, the biggest cycling race in the world. To celebrate this victory and to honour Bjarne, we decided to organize in collaboration with the municipality of Steinsel a criterium with him and his Telekom team as main attractions. In September 1996, Bjarne won this race in the pouring rain, just a few meters away from his home. After that and for nearly 20 years, the ACC Contern organized every year a criterium with some of the heros of the Tour de France as main contenders. After the instigator of this GALA Tour de France deceased in 2014, the race was called Marcel Gilles Memorial race, than Souvenir Marcel Gilles. Since 2016 and for financial reasons, the Souvenir Marcel Gilles doesn't contain any invitational criterium for pro riders any more, but the event in honour of our former president still exists and is held in function of the national race calendar, with races for young riders among others.
