A WORLD CHAMPION IN CONTERN:

A few days ago, we thought that the Belgians would not be dominant this year on the renewed course in Contern, because of the big Superprestige race on their home ground in Zonhoven (BEL). But things have changed in the last few days with the participation of the actual U23 world champion Michael Vanthourenhout and of his brother Dieter, already winner in 2008 in the rue de Moutfort.

The Vantourenhouts are on form at the beginning of the season and Dieter was able to celebrate in Switzerland, with a win in Illnau and a second place at the EKZ-race in Dielsdorf, while Michael has challenged the big names in the big races until now. He has shown among others a sensationnal season start at the world cup in Las Vegas, where he led the race on his own during a long while before finishing third behind Wout Van Aert and Sven Nys, but ahead of Van der Haar, Pauwels and the other stars. Down in 2008, when Dieter won the elite race in Contern, the little brother also made the trip to Luxemburg and Michael Vanthourenhout won his very first cyclo-cross race at the GP Comat for novices on the tough course in Contern. Since then, he has grown up …

Against the strong Belgian opposition, the Frenchmen maybe can create a surprise because several of their riders have planned to line up in the cyclo-cross in Contern, in the U23/elite race but also in the international junior and women races. As a new feature this year, these two last categories are both registrated in the international Calendar will thus reward some lucky riders with valuable UCI points.

For the first time ever, a couple will also be in the spotlights on the two main races: after a difficult year, the Chainel family has decided to focus completely on cyclo-cross again and they even created their own new team for this: Team Cross by G4. Steve, two times winner of the cyclo-cross in Contern, has aborted his career on the road and concentrates fully on cyclo-cross this winter: a win in a regional race, three international podiums and a Top 20 result in the first world-cup of the year in Las Vegas seem to approve his decision. His wife Lucie belongs to the Top of women's cyclo-cross since a few years now, a fact witnessed by a seventh place in the UCI rankings, two French National titles or a bronze medal at the 2014 world championships in Louisville. Some other main contenders in the different races will be ten times Polish champion Mariusz Gil, German National U23 champion Felix Drumm, winner in Dippach this year or the young Thalita de Jong, recently crowned with a bronze medal at the team-time-trial of the road world championships in Richmond and winner of the cyclo-cross in Ardooie, only a few days ago.
