Gran Fondo Charly Gaul Simoni said that he would like to have some of Charly Gaul’s climbing legs in the upcoming month of May, when he will line up with his new team Lampre for the last Giro of his career. Despite his 38 years, he wants to shine once again in his beloved race. “Gibo” had brought with him another native of the Trento region, former professional rider Mariano Piccolo who, like his friend, had heard of the story of Charly Gaul’s legendary win on the slopes of the Monte Bondone in the Giro 1956, a story that the Bondonieri, the inhabitants of the Monte Bondone, love mention again and again. Mariano Piccolo was a rider of Grand Tours and, even though he isn’t as popular as Simoni, it took Marcel Gilles several minutes to list his biggest wins during a very long career, among them two stage wins and two overall wins of the King of the Mountains competition in the Giro or three stage wins in the Vuelta.
