REGULATIONS

  • The 7th Charly Gaul is organised by the ACC Contern on Monday, 27 May 1996. It is a cycle trip with no set average speed, open to all cyclists aged 14 and over. It is not a race

  • Pre-registration is open until 17 May 1996. Last-minute registrations are still possible on Sunday, 26 May between 4.00 pm and 7.00 pm (Hotel Sofitel) and on Monday, 27 May from 6.00 am to 8.00 am (Olympic swimming pool).

  • The entry fees are 700 LUF for the full 158 km route and 500 LUF for the shorter 79 km route. They include refreshments and a certificate of participation (gold, silver or bronze depending on the results table) . Fees must be paid in cash when collecting race numbers (cheques not accepted)

  • Participants are road users and must therefore strictly comply with the traffic regulations. In the event of failure to comply with traffic regulations, the participant accepts full responsibility.

  • The route is clearly signed along the road.

  • Each participant must have their participation card validated in person at the checkpoints along the route. Secret checkpoints are included.

  • Participants are responsible for taking out their own accident and third-party liability insurance. The organiser accepts no liability.

  • Support vehicles are not permitted on the route.

  • Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended.

  • Each participant undertakes to wear the race number issued by the organiser.

  • The authorisation from the Ministry of Transport stipulates that cyclists falling more than one hour behind the leading rider shall be notified by the organiser via a support vehicle. The participant is then required to remove their race number, but may continue on their way without police supervision at junctions.

  • In the event of failure to comply with these regulations, the competitor may be disqualified by the organiser or by police officers present on the route.

  • By registering, the competitor accepts the conditions of participation and these regulations.

  • REPORT

For the second year running, rain had made an unwelcome appearance at the start of La Charly Gaul. As Marcel Gilles pointed out, the bad weather was undoubtedly the main reason why so many entrants had withdrawn. Whilst around a thousand competitors had been expected, only 570 brave cyclists had put on their raincoats and leg warmers for what should have been a nice spring ride. The president of ACC Contern nevertheless also emphasised that, despite the dreadful weather, there were no major incidents to report, thanks in particular to the remarkable work of the security teams.

Right from the start, Jörgen Bo Pedersen and Enzo Mezzapesa set the pace in the peloton and soon broke away at the front of the race alongside Rudy Verheyen. Unfortunately for him, Mezzapesa was forced out of the trio after suffering two punctures, and the Dane Pedersen waited until two-thirds of the way through the race to shake off the Belgian as well. Pascal Triebel was not far behind the leaders at that point, but also lost a great deal of time after a puncture. Despite suffering from shoulder pain following a recent collarbone fracture, Jörgen Bo Pedersen won the full course of the seventh edition of La Charly Gaul after a long solo breakaway, finishing no less than 4 minutes ahead of Veheyen, who in turn had maintained a lead of over 11 minutes over a small group led by Walter Vandermissen, in which Alain Penning finished fourth and was the top Luxembourger. Myriam Keller finished as the first woman on the long route, in 74th place. On the shorter route, Steve Fogen also won solo, with a lead of around twenty seconds over Christian Weyland. On the eve of his 65th birthday, Charly Gaul completed the ‘short’ ride remarkably well, finishing in 163rd place alongside his daughter Fabienne.
