The 13th Gala Tour de France is organized by the ACC Contern on Thursday, July 30, 2009 according to the regulations of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the Fédération du Sport Cycliste Luxembourgeois (FSCL). The start of the race is at 20h00 o'clock in Luxemburg-town (place Guillaume) and the finish is one hour and a half later in the same place.

It is a regional invitational race registered in the calendar of the FSCL and it is open for riders of the categories elite and U23 with or without contract.
Only riders that have concluded a preliminary contract with the ACC Contern are allowed to participate.
The event will be held as a traditionnal road race. Winner of the race is the rider who crosses the finish line in first place after the number of laps fixed by the jury.
A complementary points classification is established. Points can be collected in the intermediate sprints that take place each 5 laps and according to the following rules: 3 points to the first rider, 2 points to the second and 1 point to the third rider. The most aggressive rider will also be selected and awarded by the organizer.
No assistance car is allowed on the circuit, except those of the organizer.
Material pits will be next to the finish line. They will be controlled by a commissaire
In case of accident or mechanical problem, a rider can profit from maximum two neutralized laps if he stops in the material pits. After the neutralization, the rider resumes the race, but he can't collect any points in the next intermediate sprint.
A meeting between riders and organizers takes place on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 18h00 in the premises of the City Hall of Luxemburg-town (place Guillaume). Back numbers will be handled out at this meeting
Anti-doping controls are possible under the authority of the Luxemburgish Anti-Doping agency. In that case, they take place in the municipal swimming centre (rue des Bains)
The award ceremony takes place immediately after the race on the podium car next to the finish. The three five riders of the race, the best Luxemburgish rider, the winner of the points classification and the most agressive rider have to attend it.

He focused totally on the Tour de France, but the different preparation compared to other years didn't work out as it should have. Of course, Kim hopes on the rest of the season to take a big win, like in the Flèche Wallonne 2008.

Benoît Joachim was the first rider in recent Luxemburg cycling history to become professional, the first to show the now famous red-white-blue National jersey in stages of the Tour de France. In his long carreer as domestique, he also had some moments of glory, like on the day when he took over the amarillo jersey of leader in the Vuelta Espana. His 2009 season was stopped by a broken hand, but now he is back on the bike again and hoping to regain a decent level.

Denis is a fast sprinter and he won against Alejandro Valverde on the 2001 Mediteraneen games and against Erik Zabel in the 2004 peace race.

A dream that came true, however, was that fantastic victory in Paris-Roubaix, when he was rewarded for his offensive racing with the biggest win in his life.

Some good placings in the Flemish classics and recently in the Tour of Austria and the Tour de Suisse show that another big success could follow in 2009.

Even though he rides for an Italian team, Frederik Willems has had his best results on home soil, in the Flemish races, where he was able to take this year the overall win at the 3 days of De Panne. At the Tour de France 2009, he was mostly noted in the stage to Besancon, where he was in the good break with Ivanov and Hincapie and fought for the stage win.

Fumiyuku Beppu is a star in his home country since he is the first Japanese rider since Masatoshi Ichikawa to establish himself in European cycling and, together with Arashiro, the first one to finish the Tour de France. He will be a big attraction at the Gala Tour de France since he is known for being an offensive rider, as he has shown it during the last stage on the Champs Elysées among others.

These words spoken by Frank Schleck as he mounted his bike at the start line of the criterium sum up the key themes of the evening: emotions and excitement. An estimated 40,000 spectators came out to celebrate the heroes of the latest Tour de France in a crazy atmosphere, with all the essential ingredients for an unforgettable evening: sport, show and emotions.

The excitement was already fealable at two o’clock in the afternoon, when the first fans began to gather along the barriers, which hadn’t even been decorated with the sponsors’ names yet, to make sure they didn’t miss a moment of the show, already giving a glimpse of the buzz that was to follow that evening. There was excitement too for the youngest participants, those in the Yuppi’s Trophy, which was once again a great success with over 80 entrants, who were delighted to ride in front of such an enthusiastic crowd, to strike a pose as they crossed the finish line and answering the many journalists present, declaring loud and clear that they had just one goal in life: to become like him, like their idol, like Andy Schleck.
Another emotional moment came during the presentation of the riders, shortly after Max Becker had won the Sponsor Trophy on behalf of the Police of Luxemburg. The crowd gathered in Place Guillaume II had eyes and voices for none but them: Andy Schleck, resplendent in his white jersey as best young rider, a sight we’re starting to get used to seeing, Frank Schleck, listening with undisguised pleasure to the audio replay of his victory at Le Grand-Bornand, and Kim Kirchen, discovering that the Luxembourg crowd hadn’t forgotten him despite a Tour de France that fell somewhat short of expectations. With all due respect to the reigning world champion Allessandro Ballan, it was indeed the Luxembourgers who were the stars of the evening yesterday, and they proved it all over again by dominating the race from start to finish and the victory of one of them, Frank Schleck.
54 riders lined up for the 13th edition of the Gala Tour de France, a little bit late on the official porgram. As of the second lap, Pascal Triebel took the lead of the race with Degano, Diseviscourt, Di Gregorio and Laterza. Andy Schleck, who wanted to show himself as offensive as in the Tour de France, also jumped on the train and soon took control of the group. Behind them, Columbia led the chase of course, together with world champion Alessandro Ballan and Benoît Joachim.

On lap six, most of the riders of the break were caught again, except for Remy Di Gregorio and Pascal Triebel who remained at the front. A counter attack by Alessandro Ballan, Stuart O'Grady and Pit Schlechter Schlechter brought 10 riders into the lead: Di Gregorio, Triebel, Ballan, O'Grady and Schlechter were joined by Philippe Gilbert, Christophe Kern, Marcus Burghardt, Benoît Joachim and Claude Wolter. They managed to gain around 15 seconds advantage on the main pack.
But the collaboration was not perfect in the group and the turns not that equal. Benoît Joachim didn't believe in this group any more and he decided to have a go on his own, before being caught by Gilbert, Schlechter, Wolter and Triebel, still him. But the rest of the peloton wasn't far behind and during the 15th lap, there was a general regroupement at the front. The race started again, but several riders had already lost a lot of strength so far during the first, very animated laps. Most of the Luxemburgish amateurs had shown themselves at the front, but now the serious things were about to begin with the pros taking the commands. Karsten Kroon launched an attack, chased by Andy Schleck, Joachim, Minard, Coyot, Rosseler, Beppu and Drucker, whereas the peloton was split into several pieces. The double winner of the Henninger Turm stayed solo for another two laps, but the riders from Silence-Lotto, who were at the number of four in the second group, drove everything together again for another general regroupement at mid-race.
On lap 25, Kim Kirchen splitted the peloton again with a powerfull attack and only about 15 riders were able to follow him, among them most of the favourites, but also Christian Poos and Cyril Heymans of the Team Differdange. Kim seems very motivated to take a second win in the Gala Tour de France and he accelerated again and again. It paid finally off in the 32nd lap, when Kirchen was able to break away with Philippe Gilbert. But the Schleck brothers were still in contention and they bridged up three laps later, followed by Ballan and Simoni.
This is the good break and, with 4 laps to go, there are still lots of attacks. The Luxemburgish riders stick together against the Italian and the Belgian, while Andy Schleck managed to break away. But the world champion was very strong, he tried to bridge up again with Kirchen and Frank Schleck in his wheel, while Gilbert and Simoni were not far away and had been joined by Maxime Montfort in the chase. With two laps to go, the white jersey of this year's Tour de France was caught again by his brother, by Ballan and Kirchen. Just like so often, the race was to be decided in the very last laps.
Kim Kirchen attacked yet again and managed to break away with Frank Schleck. The elder of the two brothers had been rather coam until then and hasn't done any unnessessary efforts until then. This was a good choice since it was well Frank who was the strongest in the end, leaving Kim Kirchen behind him after a last acceleration on the small climb on the course. Frank Schleck wins the 13th edition of the Gala Tour de France with 3 seconds advantage on Alessandro Ballan, who bridged up to Kirchen at the very end to beat him in the sprint. Due to his constant present in the breaks all over the race, Andy Schleck was rewarded with the win of the intermediate sprints classification.
