The Wachovia Invitational race took place in Lancaster, Pensylvania, on 13 laps of a little bit more than 10 km. Lots of turns, ups and downs made the race tough and it was no surprise that a break went to the end. Greg Henderson was fastest in the break and team CSC represented by Allen Johansson. During the race, the men of Scott Sunderland were very active and Andy Schleck was among the offensive riders too. With 50 kilometers to go, he tried an escape with 2 other riders, but they were chased down by the bunch and Andy finished the race in the middle of the small peloton.

With some of his team-mates like Bobby Julich, Andy Schleck is currently in the USA for 10 days, where he will participate in some criteriums and in the open National USPRO Championships. First stage was CSC Invitational in Arlington over 100 km (100 laps) held under beautiful sun and before a huge crowd near Washington. After a fast race, where the CSC-riders have led many times, Andy Schleck finishes in the main peloton whereas Bobby Julich was in the decisive 4-men break.

No surprises on the last stage to Milano with a traditionnal bunch sprint an an almost traditionnal winner: Alessandro Petacchi. Paolo Savoldelli obtains the overall victory in what was one of the most interesting Giro of the last years with little advantage on Gilberto Simoni and the surprising Jose Rujano. Frank Schleck should make a positive analyse of his first Giro. Even if his own good results were rare due to the team tactics (5th in Varazze), he showed that he can be one of the best climbers in the world and that he has huge potential for the big stage races.

Dramatic last mountain stage where the main rivals of Savoldelli (Di Luca, Simoni, Rujano) attacked him together and where the maglia rosa virtually changed several times. At the beginning of the terrible Colle delle Finestre (18,5 km climb of medium 9,2 gradient, with the last 8 km on a gravel road) the pink jersey had difficulties and Di Luca, Rujano and Simoni drove up the speed in the front group. The group got smaller and smaller, so that the 3 riders were alone in the lead on the gravels. At the top of the Finestra, Savoldelli was over 2 minutes late and Simoni was virtually overall winner of the 88th Giro d'Italia. But 3 things occured that prevented him from winning: first, Danilo Di Luca who contributed a lot to the break until then, was victim of cramps and lost contact to the leaders, then several riders regrouped around Savoldelli who found strategic allies, and finally Simoni himself was victim of cramps and he had to let Rujano ride away to a merited stage victory. At the end, Savoldelly kept the pink jersey for merely 28 seconds. The CSC riders were not among the best today and Frank Schleck finished the stage more than 20 minutes down.

Like in the first time-trial, CSC has dominated the stage with the victory of Ivan Basso, who proves with a second success in two days that he is well one of the strongest riders of this Giro, with the 3rd place of David Zabriskie, the 15th of Blaudzun and the 18th of Frank Schleck. On a course with 350 m difference in altitude, the Luxemburgish rider has done a very constant racing, without forcing too much as he said. At the intermediate timings he was pointed in 17th, 19th and 18th position, losing a little bit more than a minute on the flat and another one in the 7 km long climb. As for the overall victory, Savoldelli profited perfectly from his fantastic downhill skills and took a minute to Simoni as well as a minute and a half to Di Lucca and to the pocket climber Jose Rujano. Before the very last mountain stage tomorrow, the Discovery rider has two minutes of advantage on Simoni and 3 minutes on Rujano.

Once more, Frank Schleck has shown what he is capable at in the mountains, this time by doing a tactical masterpiece together with Ivan Basso, who has found his legs... or let's say his stomach.. of one week ago. On the Coletto del Moro, a climb of 3 kilometers but with terrible 17% gradient, Lampre with Cunego-Simoni controlled the speed, but shortly afterwards, the two CSC-riders attacked and took with them 4 other riders: Cioni (Liquigas), Caruso (Liberty), Tiralongo (Panaria) and Lobato (Saunier). At the foot of the last climb, the little group where Schleck did most of the work had one minute and a half of advantage on the Gruppo Maglia Rosa where Lampre still was leading and where Savoldelli was on his own. Frank Schleck drove the group up the climb until 7 km to the finish line where Gianpaolo Caruso attacked. The Luxemburgish rider eased his pace but Basso countered and flew away to the stage victory. Behind them, Gilberto Simoni has rewarded the work of his team-mates by attacking with 6 km to go and gaining 42" on Savoldelli and 1'43" on Di Luca. In the overall classification, before the two decisive stages to come, Simoni in now noted in second position 58" behind "Il Falco".

Second day for Frank Schleck with no team order to follow and he didn't hesitate to go on the attack on a mostly flat course but with some up and downs in the final part. With more than 100 km to go, he got clear in a group of 18 riders, with 13 teams represented. The peloton let them go and they quickly got 10 minutes of advantage. After an attack of Vanotti on a climb with 50 kilometers to go, only 6 remained at the front: Frank Schleck, Alessandro Vanotti (Domina Vacanze), Addy Engels (Quickstep), Christophe Brandt (Davitamon-Lotto), Dmitri Fofonov (Cofidis) and Christophe Le Mevel (Credit Agricole). Another attack of Vanotti on the descent of the Bric Berton as well as an attempt from Engels brought nothing and the 6 reached Varazze together. With 1500m to go, Christophe Le Mevel attacked, the other riders hesitated to go behind and it was too late: the Frenchman from Crédit Agricole won the stage with 200m of advance on the rest of the group, whereas Frank Schleck took 5th place.

Belgian rider Roy Sentjens first, then Italian rider Rafaele Illiano have opened the road for a long time, but then the Fassa-Bortolo train has conducted their sprint star Alessandro Petacchi to a third victory, contested only by Erik Zabel two meters behind him. Like yesterday, he was part of an early break and has flown away to victory with 15km to go. The other one, Italian rider Ivan Basso, hit the bottom by losing nearly 45 minutes to the other GC contenders. Ill and incapable of eating anything during the stage, the leader of team CSC was dropped on the terrible Passo Stelvio, the Cima Coppi (roof) of this year's Giro. This has led to a curious situation concerning the luxemburgish riders on this mighty climb: the "rouleur" Benoît Joachim was pacing the front group for maglia rosa Savoldelli, whereas the climber Frank Schleck was losing more and more time alongside his team captain.

Frank Schleck has been enroled in this Giro to help Ivan Basso in the mountains and he did this once more in extraordinary manner today. The maglia rosa wasn't at his best because he seems to have contracted some stomach trouble, and the tandem Simoni-Cunego attacked early on, at the foot of the difficult Passo delle Erbe with 70 km to go. Ivan Basso couldn't react himself to this acceleration, but he sent out Schleck and Zabriskie to the front of the small group. The two CSC riders held up a significant speed, so that they caught the two Lampre-riders before the end of the climb. After that, they continued to take turns in front of the group until 7 km from the finish, in the last climb. That was the place chosen by Simoni to perform another attack. While Ivan Basso tried to limit the losses, another rider seemed very strong: Paolo Savoldelli. He chased down Simoni, dropped him a little later and took the pink jersey at the finish line. Several minutes before him, Ivan Parra had taken the stage win out of an early break.

The first big mountain stage in the Dolomites with 4 climbs and a mountain top finish has already brought significant changes in the overall classification. After accelerations of Simoni and then Basso on the Passo Duran, penultimate climb of the day, only 3 riders remained at the front: Basso, Simoni and Savoldelli. On the last climb, Simoni lost contact to the little group and the two others shared the cake: Savoldelli took the stage win and Basso the Maglia Rosa. The good surprise of the day came from race leader Di Luca who was never far behind the leaders and lost only 1 minute to them at the finish. The victims were without doubt the Lampre-riders: Simoni lost 20" but defending champion Cunego had a bad day and lost over 6 minutes. In the same group, Frank Schleck crossed the finish line, having done his work perfectly because he managed to stay with his leader Basso until the attacks on the Passo Duran. Let's also have a word about Benoît Joachim, the luxemburgish rider who made a long solo break at the beginning of the stage and stayed in front for exactly 100 kms.

The difficult course around Boulogne saw beautiful racing today with lots of attacks, because several riders could still dream of the overall victory at the start. The teams of Crédit Agricole with Hushovd and Moreau as well as Bouyges Telecom with Voeckler and Fedrigo were most active today in attacking Team CSC and the race leader. But the red and white riders worked hard and Linus Gerdemann, but also Andy Schleck were often present at the front of the field and in most of the attacks. Until the last climb where the two youngsters were several meters behind the very best, which was enough for Pierrick Fedrigo to catch the leader's jersey. A great race also by Russian rider Vladimir Efimkin who escaped on the last lap for a solo victory. Andy Schleck still maintains a Top 10 place in the overall classification.

On the stage around the beautifull region of the "2 capes" in Northern Pas-de-Calais, the two youngsters of team CSC showed their excellent skills. Andy Schleck has finished in 4th place, just before his team-mate Linus Gerdemann who, in his first race for the team, has worn the CSC jersey only one day, before taking the mountains jersey and now the overall lead. Both riders finished in a first group of 5, just behind stage winner Thomas Voeckler. The French champion who had already initiated the final break with 15 km to go, attacked once more just before the final climb and managed to hold his lead until the line. Andy Schleck will start in the best young rider's jersey on the tough stage around Boulogne-sur-Mer tomorrow.

Stage 2 presented a relatively flat profile, but due to some sections of cobblestones around Valenciennes, there was a lot of action. Finally, three men issued of a break of 19 with eventual winner Philippe Gilbert managed to keep an 8" lead to the finish line. Behind them a chasing group of 50 riders with among others Andy Schleck. On this hectic and very fast stage, numerous riders lost a lot of time today.

DNF / winner Erik Zabel

After a very bad start into the season 2005, team T-Mobile comes back to the front of the scene with the victory of Vinokourov in Liège and today, a historical victory in their home Grand-prix. Historical, because Erik Zabel is the first man to win the "beer race" for the third time in his career. He deserved the victory because he clearly seemed the strongest rider of the 21-men break that dominated the race. Dominated in a way that all the other riders preferred to quit the race when they saw that their chances were fading away. Kim Kirchen, who suffered from the heat and the sudden weather change, left the competition after 100 km.
