| September 4-26, 2004 Frank Schleck |
Results | 26.09.2004: 21. Madrid - Madrid (time-trial) | Links:
| 27th at 2'00" of Perez |
Good performance of Frank Schleck in the last stage: he shows that he can also do very well in flat time-trials. After a cautious start (38th at 1 minute after 10 km, 38th at 1'53" after 23 km), he has lost only 7 seconds on Perez in the last 5 kilometers and gained 11 positions for the stage result. Santiago Perez has won his third stage in the Vuelta 2004, but couldn't avoid a third overall victory for Roberto Heras, with a minimal gap of 30 seconds after more than 77 race hours.
| 46th at 1'35'10" of Heras |
Results | 25.09.2004: 20. La Vega de Alcobendas - Puerto de Navacerrada | Links:
| 54th at 6'47" of Gutierrez |
Last mountain stage and the suspense is bigger than ever in this Vuelta. Before the closing time-trial, Roberto Heras lost some precious seconds on Perez on the Puerto de Navacerrada and has now only 43 seconds advantage left in the general classification. Once again, the day was marked by a long break and the battle of the favourites on the last climb. Frank Schleck lost contact to the peloton when this battle begun.
| 48th at 1'33'23" of Heras |
Results | 24.09.2004: 19. Avilla - Collado Vilalba | Links:
| 47th at 6'25" of Zaballa |
The Luxemburgish riders were in the middle of the action today. Benoît Joachim took part in a long break and was rewarded with a nice 9th place in the stage result. Frank Schleck was on the other side of the ring: Team CSC decided to make the pace in the peloton because in the break, Carlos Garcia threatened the sixth place overall of Sastre. Schleck crossed the finish line in the main pack.
| 49th at 1'28'43" of Heras |
Results | 23.09.2004: 18. Bejar - Avilla | Links:
| 36th at 2'28" of Rodriguez |
Another difficult stage today, but this time it had no incidence on the general classification. Actually all the favourites for the overall victory crossed the finish line together in a little group of 7 riders, 1'24" behind Rodriguez and Parra remaining in the lead from an early break. Frank Schleck made a good impression today. Despite a big battle between favourites launched by Mancebo on the last climb, he lost only one minute to the best today.
| 50th at 1'28'43" of Heras |
Results | 22.09.2004: 17. Plasencia - Estacion de Esqui La Covatilla | Links:
| 70th at 25'59" of Cardenas |
Maybe a decision today on a stage with 4 climbs, because on the last uphill, younster Alejandro Valverde was not able to follow leader Heras and lost over 3 Minutes. Heras has now 1'13" advance on the new second Santiago Perez in the overall classification. Frank Schleck lost contact to the best riders (a group of nearby 60 men) on the second climb when Liberty Seguros started to increase the speed. He crosses the finish line in the first bigger group of approximately 20 riders.
| 57th at 1'27'39" of Heras |
Results | 21.09.2004: 16. Olivenca - Caceres | Links:
| 68th at 11'53" of Julia |
A last transition stage before the decisive stages of this Vuelta. Under big heat, the riders suffered and and 13 riders could get more than 17 minutes of advance. At the finish line, solo winner Julia still had nearly 12 minutes of advance on the main field. Frank Schleck finishes the stage in the second part of this main group.
| 52th at 1'02'41" of Heras |
Results | 19.09.2004: 15. Granada - Sierra Nevada | Links:
| 34th at 7'34" of Perez |
Today was the mountain time-trial and Frank Schleck showed very good form. He lost most of the time on the first 13 km, the most difficult ones, and finished among the first quarter of the riders. Heras has only 5 seconds of advantage left on Valverde.
| 52th at 1'02'32" of Heras |
Results | 18.09.2004: 14. Malaga - Granada | Links:
| 33th at 6'58" of Perez |
New mountain stage with a very tough last climb and very big heat. Frank Schleck does a good race and finishes in a third group. Nothing is still decided for the overall classification before tomorrow's mountain time-trial.
| 53th at 56'49" of Heras |
Results | 17.09.2004: 13. El Ejido - Malaga | Links:
| 46th at 0" of Petacchi |
After the tough mountain stages, a flat stage is welcome and the sprinters and their teams take the control. A few brave ones have tried the impossible, but their advantage was never big enough to dream about victory. Petacchi wins his 4th stage and Zabel is runner-up for the 5th time.
| 58th at 50'37" of Heras |
Results | 16.09.2004: 12. Almeria - Calar Alto | Links:
| 91th at 31'51" of Heras |
A very tough stage today right after the rest day, with 3 of the most difficult climbs. Roberto Heras seems to be the strongest rider of the Vuelta because he took the stage victory and the leader's jersey today. Team CSC schowed a very agressive riding on the stage, trying to put riders into the breaks. Frank Schleck also attacked with Vinokourov at the beginning of the race but his escape didn't last long. Afterwards, he paid these efforts and had to finish in the grupetto.
| 60th at 50'37" of Heras |
Results | 14.09.2004: 11. San Vincente del Raspeig - Caravaca de la Cruz | Links:
| 11th at 1'11" of Zabriskie |
Big heat today on the vuelta and big effort also from David Zabriskie with a solo ride of 160 kms at nearly 40 km/h average, from km 5 to the finish line. The rest of the field finishes in a sprint, with Frank Schleck in the first positions and also an injured Alejandro Valerde in it, after a crash at the beginning of the stage.
| 50th at 19'33" of Landis |
Results | 13.09.2004: 10. Alcoi - Xorret de Cati | Links:
| 43th at 6'31" of Jimenez |
Another mountain stage with lots of category 2 and 3 climbs and a funny situation: A group of 7 with mostly sprinters (O'Grady, Zabel and Freire) gained over 10 minutes of advantage during the stage. Too much for the peloton to come back despite the chasing of the Liberty Seguros riders. Jimenez wins the stage by dropping the sprinters on the final uphill. Frank Schleck makes a much better result than yesterday: he was dropped on the ultimate climb but lost less than 2 minutes on the favourites, together with riders like Oscar Sevilla or Victor Hugo Pena.
| 50th at 19'32" of Landis |
Results | 12.09.2004: 9. Xativa - Alto de Aitana | Links:
| 80th at 13'28" of Piepoli |
First mountain top finish in this year's Tour across Spain and a difficult day for Frank Schleck. After having been dropped several times in the first 6 climbs, but managed to come back each time, he had to let the big group go at the foot of the seventh and last difficulty, together with riders like Vinokourov, Zubeldia or Di Luca. After that, he lost nearly 1 minute per km on the best riders. At the front of the race, the Liberty Seguros riders Noval and Heras made a big impression, but the gaps are minimal to the other GC contenders.
| 54th at 18'08" of Landis |
Results | 11.09.2004: 8. Factoria Ford - Factoria Ford | Links:
| 65th at 3'42" of Hamilton |
A very flat time-trial that can be considered as first real test for this Vuelta. Whereas Frank Schleck did a correct race and limited his time loss, the US Postal team does another great performance, placing 3 of its riders among the best 4, with only olympic champion Tyler Hamilton being better. Another good stage for Joachim also in 13th spot.
| 35th at 5'34" of Landis |
Results | 10.09.2004: 7. Castellon de la Plana - Valencia | Links:
| 51th at 0" of Petacchi |
A stage less diffcult than yesterday, and here he comes again: Petacchi won the sprint by a big length, perfectly guided by the Fassa Bortolo team. Erik Zabel second for the 4th time. Frank Schleck in the bunch.
| 34th at 2'11" of Beltran |
Results | 09.09.2004: 6. Benicarlo - Castellon de la Plana | Links:
| 58th at 0" of Freire |
Another stage with some uphill parts, so only about 80 riders reached the finish line together for the victory. Petacchi was not present in this group, and it was Oscar Freire who sprinted best. Very nice victory because his Rabobank team did a lot of work during the whole stage. Benoît Joachim again very active in the final, he and Frank Schleck finished in the front group.
| 35th at 2'11" of Beltran |
Results | 08.09.2004: 5. Zaragoza - Morella | Links:
| 34th at 56" of Menchov |
First contact with mountains today: a climb of second and a climb of third category in the last 25 kms. In the first one an under the impulse of some of the favourites (Cunego, Valverde, Gonzalez, Di Luca), a group of 25 riders has escaped from the rest of the field. It managed to stay away until the last uphill, where russian rider Denis Menchov made a big impression. Frank Schleck and Benoît Joachim weren't able to follow the high speed of the lead group and both of them finished in the first part of the main field. Joachim loses the leader's jersey to his teammate Beltran.
| 35th at 2'11" of Beltran |
Results | 07.09.2004: 4. Soria - Zaragoza | Links:
| 72th at 0" of Petacchi |
Heavy wind, narrow roads and lots of crashes: no easy stage today in the Vuelta even if it looked like that on paper. Strong head- and crosswinds slowed down the pack to 30-35km/h at moments. 4 riders (Fernandez, Laidoun, Isasi, Florencio) were brave enough to escape in a long break but they were caught again. At the end, the sprinters and their king Petacchi took possession of the stage. Frank Schleck in the peloton and Joachim still in yellow. |

| 37th at 1'48" of Joachim |
Results | 06.09.2004: 3. Burgos - Soria | Links:
| 35th at 15" of Valverde |
Great day for luxemburgish cycling because with Benoît Joachim, a rider of our small country takes the leader's jersey in one of the three big tours. This hasn't happened for nearly 50 years, but it is well deserved because for over 100 kms, Benoît has taken strong turns in the lead of the race together with Flickinger, Hulsmans and Veneberg. They have been caught with just 7 kms to go, but by taking all three intermediate sprints, Joachim assured his yellow jersey for tonight. There was an uphill with 2 kms to go today and the peloton broke into pieces on this small climb. Frank Schleck finished among the first of the biggest of these groups. |

| 41th at 1'46" of Joachim |
Results | 05.09.2004: 2. Léon - Burgos | Links:
| 70th at 0" of Petacchi |
A stage marked by some crashes and heavy crosswinds that broke the peloton into pieces in the second part of the race. But in the end it all came together for a bunch sprint except for 40 riders who already lost precious time in today's stage. Pettacchi showed that he is still the best sprinter and Benoît Joachim is now second overall after having done the intermediate sprints.
| 42th at 1'30" of Van Heeswijk |
Results | 04.09.2004: 1. Léon - Léon (team time trial) | Links:
| 6th at 1'24" ofs US Postal |
Very carefull start of the CSC-team for this opening team-time trial of the Vuelta 2004. In none of the intermediate points, they are amont the best teams, but at the end, the team of Bjarne Riis catches up a little bit, finishing in 32'09" at an honourable 6th place. But there was nothing to be done against this perfectly working US Postal machine with among others Benoît Joachim who dominated the stage. |
