Another top ten result for Frank Schleck who rode in a very attentive way in the final of this tough race with two climbs on each of the 10 laps. On the Strickhöhe, last climb with 5 km to go, he passed in second position, stayed at the front of the bunch and used his good finishing skills to take 5th place at the finish, where 40 riders sprinted for victory. |

Very close decisions at the last stage on the climbs of the Amstel Gold Race. Kim Kirchen loses the stage for a few centimeters and Ekimov the overall victory for one second to Erik Dekker. All that after a very animated stage with a group of 4 (Kirchen, Van Bondt, Moerenhout, Schreck and later also Dekker) in the lead with 20 km to go. But under the impulse of the US Postal and CSC teams, all these riders were caught 6 kms from the finish line. A group of 25 riders then fought out the stage and overall victories in the sprint.

Kirchen today in the front part of the bunch on a hilly stage with the highest point of the race. Van Bon wins after a long, long break together with Belgian rider Marc Streel, but the big battle didn't take place in the bunch today.

A medium-rated performance by Kim Kirchen, started early in this first real test of the Ronde van Nederland. The specialists like Ekimov and Wauters dominated today and the gaps are big already. The russian rider, winner of last year's event, has taken the leader's jersey and has now a serious option on a new overall victory. A good performance by Benoît Joachim with a 15th place in the time trial.

New massiv sprint, but this time Alessandro Petacchi takes the victory under rainy conditions, coming back to form after his crash in the Tour and well launched by his Fassa Bortolo teammates. Kirchen in the main field.

2 out of 2 for dutch sprinter Van Heeswijk in a stage with the same film as the day before: massive sprint after all the breaks have been neutralized and Kim Kirchen crossing the finish line at the back of the bunch.

The day was marked by a break of 3 riders, Van Katwijk, Secchiari and Bracke, that escaped at the start and was caught only a few kilometers from the finish line, and by a mass sprint won by the US Postal rider. Kim Kirchen ended the stage in the main bunch.

Frank Schleck has not reached the finish-line in Zürich, but has shown an offensive ride on the course. Two riders (Zabriskie and Barredo) had escaped from the field after 10 km and the CSC-rider attacked in the peloton, trying to create a chase group. But he didn't get much support from other riders, so he abandoned his plans after having ridden alone for several kilometers. With these tactics, he lost much strengh, so it was evident that he couldn't play a big role in the final, where Bettini lost the sprint for victory for the third time in three weeks, this time beaten by Kim Kirchen's teammate Juan-Antonio Flecha.

Fantastic performance of the luxemburgish team at the Olympic Games in Athens, rewarded with a 6th place for Kim Kirchen at the finish. Very calm in the first half of the race, they have shown themselves very active afterwards: Benoît Joachim was at the front when the Germans started the first serious things, Frank Schleck when Bettini attacked for the first time on the climb. Schleck and Kirchen tried several times on the last two laps to force a decision themselves, but there was nothing to do today against the king: Paolo Bettini was the strongest today and deserved the victory by attacking with Portuguese rider Paulinho two laps from the end.

Abandon
Both of the luxemburgish riders didn't have a very good day on one of the last World Cup races. Nor Kirchen, nor Schleck were at the front, when Bettini and Rebellin exploded the race on the Jaizkibel, with 30 km to go. But wheras the CSC rider finishes in a good position in the main field, the Fassa Bortolo man is not mentioned in the final classification.

Very good performance of Frank Schleck in Italy where he finishes 3rd in the sprint of a group of chasers 10 seconds behind Bettini. On a very tough course covered at an extraordinary speed (43,700 km/h), the Italian attacked on the last climb and got a small gap, despite the opposition of the duo Simoni and Cunego, then he resisted to the chasing group until the finish line. Schleck finished in this group behind Di Luca and Paolini.

HEW Cyclassics (Hamburg - Hamburg)

15th at 0" of Stuart O'Grady
In the world-cup race in Hamburg, the selection is generally made in the 5 climbs of the Waseberg. Kim Kirchen rode very well each time the short but steep climb showed itself up. Several times, he was in a group that took some advance before being caught again by the peloton. On the last climb, he wasn't quite able to follow the very best, led by the ever active Bettini, but managed to catch them some kilometers later together with other riders like Erik Zabel. In the lead group of 33 riders that was now flying towards the finish line, Kim stayed very active like other riders: Axel Merckx, Philippe Gilbert or Jan Ullrich. But despite all attacks and counter-attacks, the decision had to be made in the final sprint won by O'Grady before Bettini, with Kirchen taking 15th place.
